Plant Selection
  • Garden centers carry a wide selection of perennials that may be planted in June. It is a good time for the gardener to find more mature specimens of favorite summer bloomers at the garden center. It is also a good time to plan and plant a sequential summer perennial display of old-favorites and new cultivars. There are many spectacular flowering performers for the sultry summer season.
  • A good place to start the selection process is to purchase Perennial Plant of the Year selections. These outstanding selections of June flowering perennials include Salvia nemorosa 'Mainacht' (perennial salvia), Scabiosa columbaria'Butterfly Blue' (pincushion flower), Astilbe 'Sprite' (false spirea), and the 2001 POY, Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster' (feather reed grass). Other popular perennials for June and later summer bloom include Leucanthemum'Becky' (Shasta daisy), Hemerocallis'Happy Returns' (daylily), and an old favorite, Iris sibirica(Siberian iris).
  • Gardeners should consider combinations that will create a garden impact. A combination of Perovskia atriplicifolia (Russian sage), Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' (gloriosa daisy), and Sedum'Herbstfreude' (Autumn Joy sedum) will provide a long flowering period. Another effective combination might include Salvia 'Mainacht' (perennial salvia) with golden Coreopsis lanceolata'Early Sunrise' (lanceleaf coreopsis), and dusty red Centranthus ruber(jupiter's beard).
  • June is a time to discover new perennials at your local botanical garden, arboretum, or the display gardens at your favorite garden center. It is also time to participate in a neighborhood or city wide garden tour to study perennials and garden design.
