This booklet is based on surveys being conducted in the United States and Canada by the Education Committee of the Perennial Plant Association since 1985. We are pleased to present the 5th edition of “A Guide to Herbaceous Perennial Gardens in the United States and Canada” with many new additions and revisions of gardens in the States and in Canada.
Our objectives are to identify locations of existing demonstration/display gardens accessible to the public where people can learn more about herbaceous perennial plants. We are committed to provide the ultimate consumers, the serious gardeners with the kind of information that leads to successful experiences with herbaceous perennials. We are also committed to our members for promoting the increasing use of herbaceous perennials in both public and private gardens.
There are 323 gardens listed from forty-six states and the District of Columbia in the United States and 37 gardens from nine provinces in Canada. This edition includes 14 new gardens and 14 revisions. This list is still far from being completed. It is interesting to know, however, that we have included gardens in existence from 1835, the Union College in Schenectady, NY, and as recent as 2002.
Garden information compiled also includes the location, size, collection of plants, design criteria, and services available to the public - educational brochure, plant labeling, and tour information.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank those folks who took time to complete survey forms for us. Please contact me if you know of any display/demonstration gardens of herbaceous perennials not included in this listing where plants are properly labeled and which are accessible to the public.
