Now accepting applications for the

2013 PPA Scholarship Program.  

The Perennial Plant Association is proud to offer five scholarships to college students studying horticulture or a related subject area coupled with attendance at the 31st Perennial Plant Symposium in Vancouver, British Columbia, July 21-27. Students enrolled in two- or four-year programs are eligible to apply.
Each scholarship recipient will receive $1000. Each scholarship recipient will attend the 2013 Perennial Plant Symposium in Vancouver, British Columbia. Each scholarship recipient will receive complimentary registration for the Symposium and tours and will receive complimentary lodging during the symposium.
Completed applications should be received at the PPA office by February 1, 2013. Each scholarship applicant will be notified in March.

Tina Gibson

Tina currently attends the Community College of Baltimore, Maryland and she will graduate in the spring of 2013. Her major in sustainable horticulture will allow her to gain the knowledge she needs to continue her business, Gardening by Tina, which she started in 2010. She also holds a BA in business from the University of La Verne. Tina has completed an internship with the Smithsonian Institution Horticulture Services Division, where she was responsible for care and research of the museum orchid collection. Upon graduation she will work towards furthering the success of her business.

Jared E. Hughes

Jared attends the Ohio State University and is a senior in Sustainable Plant Systems with a Horticulture specialization. He has been passionate about horticulture and particularly perennials, since he started work at Foertmeyer and Sons Greenhouse Company in his hometown of Cardington, Ohio at age 18. He has been with the company since. He is a member of the Ohio Floral Association and Central Ohio Growers Association. After his graduation from Ohio State University Jared will continue a life in the plant industry.

Marianne Maddeford

Marianne attends Kansas State University and is a senior majoring in Horticulture and minoring in Business. She is a member of the Kansas State Landscape Contracting Team, a competitor at PLANET field days, and she completed a horticulture study abroad in England. Currently she assists in research and is working on a project to control flower color of hydrangeas. She hopes to enter into research that will expand the selection of hardy perennials.

David Mattern

David attends the Professional Gardener Training Program at Longwood Gardens and is in his second year, majoring in Ornamental Horticulture. He has completed a BS in Landscape Contracting with an emphasis on design, and a minor in Horticulture at Pennsylvania State University. He has worked as a gardener at The Brandywine Cottage and he has completed an internship at Longwood Gardens. David plans to pursue a career as an outdoor gardener and an educator in public horticulture.

Brian Andrew-Louis Roach

Brian is a senior majoring in Horticulture, with minors in Biology, Spanish, and Landscape Architecture at North Carolina State University. He is a member and officer of the Horticulture Club, and a member of Honors Horticulture Fraternity. He has competed at PLANET field days. He has worked as a Student Conservation Association Trail Restoration Intern in Oregon. Brian plans to use horticultural knowledge to design sustainable solutions to landscape problems through the use of perennials.

The Perennial Plant Association (PPA) is proud to offer five scholarships to college students studying horticulture or a related subject area. Students enrolled in two or four-year programs are eligible to apply.

Each scholarship recipient will receive complimentary registration for lectures and tours at the 2012 Perennial Plant Symposium in Boston, Massachusetts July 4-10 and a $1000 scholarship. Recipients will also receive complimentary lodging during the symposium. Scholarship recipients are welcomed and encouraged to attend the entire symposium. Each recipient must attend July 6-8 to be eligible for the $1000 scholarship. Applicants should consider this requirement before applying.

The completed application, statement of purpose, official college transcript, and three letters of recommendation should be mailed to the PPA office by March 9, 2012. Each scholarship applicant will be notified in late April.

 

Requirements:

  • Student should be majoring or minoring in horticulture or a related field.
  • Student should have at least one quarter or semester remaining following spring term 2012.
  • Student should have a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Recipients must be able to attend the 2012 Perennial Plant Symposium in Boston, Massachusetts.
  • An interest in a career in perennials is preferred but not required.
  • Applications must be postmarked on or before March 1, 2012.
  • Undergraduate students only are eligible.
  • Prior PPA scholarship recipients are not eligible.
